During the Civil War, smallpox vaccinations were hard to come by, so many soldiers took a DIY approach.
In an attempt to stave off smallpox, Civil War soldiers would try to self-vaccinate by cutting themselves and putting discharge from a comrade's smallpox pustule into the cut. As can be expected, there were side effects.
